If it weren’t for Ella Grace, I would ask the earth to swallow me whole. The apartment is a mess—a chaotic whirlwind of baby toys, half-folded laundry, dirty dishes in the sink, and I haven’t washed my hair in three days. Dry shampoo. Ella Grace’s soft cries pierce through the haze, and I grab a pacifier.

I hold her close, bouncing lightly to calm her, grateful for the excuse to hide my nerves. Except nothing gets by James Randall.

James is here. His presence has always put me in a bit of a trance. Today it’s mixed with a panic. He sits on the couch, my couch, his ocean-blue eyes tracking my every move. I feel his concern and curiosity, pressing against my back. But I can’t face him, I look all around the apartment to avoid his gaze.

“Shh, it’s okay, baby,” I whisper to Ella, who’s finally starting to settle. Her little fingers clutch at my shirt, grounding me in the present moment. I try to focus on her, on staying busy. Anything to avoid looking at James.

I start fixing her a bottle. These tasks are my shields, keeping the swirling emotions at bay. How the hell do I explain this to him? I’m panicked and unsure where to start.

“She’s… perfect,” James finally breaks the silence. Damn, I love that man for his first words about Ella. He may not say much, and that can be infuriating, but I know that with James, the protector that he is, they’re always true.

I nod, not trusting myself to speak. My heart pounds in my chest, louder than his words. I keep my back to him.

My hand trembles as I secure the top of the bottle. Shake shake shake. Then I pop it in the bottle warmer. I want to turn to organizing Ella’s toys, anything to keep busy.

“Is she...?” he asks half the question, and yet the full weight hangs between us.

My heart stops. I can’t avoid it any longer. What must he think? How can I ever explain my decision to him? Will he ever forgive me?

But I owe him an answer.
